Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. Palliative care is based on the needs of the patient, not on the patient’s prognosis. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness. Palliative care teams focus on quality of life.

THE DESIGN DIRECTION FOR THIS PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT IS MEANT TO EVOKE A FEELING OF CALM, COMFORT AND PEACE WITH A DISTINCTIVE NOD TO NATURE. THE HOPE IS THAT BRINGING IN NATURAL ELEMENTS, SPECIFICALLY TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE SOFFIT IN THE PATIENT ROOM, WILL BRIGHTEN THE PATIENT’S EXPERIENCE AS THEY CAN HAVE A VIEW OF NATURE WHEN LAYING DOWN AND GAZING UPWARD.

The client requested a flooring design upgrade as the main component to their cosmetic upgrade, and their final selection was one of my designs. The idea behind the design was to provide shapes and colors that are aesthetically pleasing and simultaneously dynamic, providing sensical movement through the space and taking wayfinding into consideration.
